Audi A5’s have become reasonably affordable. this 2008 is $14,500, but lots more under 20k if you’re cheapest Audi averse (as you should be). The updated 2010 2.0 A5s are following close behind with some just over 20k. However, the original looks better in my eyes.

I don’t think I quite appreciate how fast cars in the UK depreciate; I haven’t checked A4s yet, but higher mileage A5s are getting close to $10,000 here, even if ours probably are lower spec than US cars

Yeah, I don’t know how the British used car market works. I assume there are huge taxes, maintenance and fees associated with a used car or else no one could ever sell a new one.

Damn, I wonder why they aren’t holding their value well.

Counterpoint: imagine how affordable they’ll be in another few years.

This probably has an effect actually

Cars are taxed annually based on a range of factors, mostly linking to CO2 emissions and size; it’s free for certain cars, but £100-200 for most cars

Then, after 3 years, there’s an MOT test that checks the car is roadworthy; compared to American inspections, it’s really strict; most cars over about 10 years old won’t pass first time unless they’re well looked after.

It also doesn’t help that our cars are RHD and rust pretty quick.

They’re also generally lower spec than most US cars; a lot of the A5s at the lower end of the market have cloth seats, smaller (often diesel) engines and manual transmissions.

Well, it is a 7 year old Audi with over 100k miles. Besides, many were sold on being fashionable, and fashion has moved on. Still think it is a good looking car which is rare as I generally dislike cars with very high beltlines.

I see what you did there.

Do these still have 8 or 16 ball joints in front?

true, but then you’re dealing with 10 year old Audi on perhaps the third or 4th owner, so it gets riskier. If you get one now you can stay on top of the maintenance.

eh, who am I kidding I’ll buy one in 5 years for $5,000 and confirm all my anti-german car bias. That future piece of crap.

And I’ll tell you what - Audi sure has a lot of ad time so far in the Jets game I’m watching.

I have a biased hatred against these, due to the fact one may be the reason for possibly totaling my GLI

A quick AutoTrader search of the cheapest A5s in the 25 mile rasius of the SF Bay Area turned up two prime candidates.

A perfectly ruined quasi-bro’ed gray 59k mile automatic 2.0T Quattro A5 for $20k

...

Or a nicely curb-rashed black 26k mile manual 2.0T Quattro A5 for only $23k!

I saw a nice looking white one yesterday, it did in fact get me thinking about these cars. I’d love to get a pre facelift 2.0T manual one.
This one is sooooooooo clean.

It’s alright. I personally find the A5 to be their sexiest design, and one of my favorites among modern cars. But the “usual” reasons hold me back from ever considering one.
